Personal Safety and Security

General information

  • In an on-campus emergency, dial 6 from any UTS-internal phone or 1800-249-559.
This will take you through to Security Services who can coordinate an immediate response or Emergency Services access.
  • Watch the video "Escape from UTS" (for UTS staff and students only) illustrating how to evacuate UTS buildings in an emergency. Students living in UTS residences should also refer to the evacuation procedures for their individual residences.
  • Be alert to strangers in your work and study areas. If you feel someone is acting suspiciously, contact Security and provide them with the description and whereabouts of the person(s) of concern.

Looking after your personal property

  • Personal property (handbags, calculators, phones, laptops etc) should not be left unattended.
  • Record the make, model and serial number of your computer and any devices associated with it.
  • The doors to labs, workshops and offices should be locked whenever personal items are to be left unattended. Where possible, place the items in a locked cabinet.
  • Report any thefts or suspicious activity to Security immediately (dial 6 from UTS-internal telephones).
  • Park your bicycle in the bicycle rack locations on site. Use a good quality lock. Lock or remove detachable parts. Think about having your bike security-marked or engraved.

Public transport

Car security

  • Always lock your car doors and close the windows to avoid theft.
  • Don't leave anything in the car - loose change or a jacket might be a target for a thief.
  • Keep pen, paper, a street directory and a torch in the car.

Away from home

  • Leave the house secure by closing and locking all doors and windows. Keys should not be left in internal doors and windows when you are not home.
  • Keep cash and valuables out of sight and easy reach.
  • Avoid leaving notes on the door that suggest no-one is home.
  • Avoid leaving a key in a 'hiding place' e.g. under a mat or pot plant etc.

Social situations

Spiked drinks

  • If you start to feel very drunk in an unusually short period of time in comparison to how much you have drunk, your drink may have been spiked. Tell your friend(s), security or bar manager quickly - waiting even a few minutes may put you at risk.
  • If a friend appears to become drunk very quickly, take them to a safe place immediately. Depending on the circumstances you may wish to advise security or bar staff/manager.
  • Don't leave drinks unattended.
  • Buy your own drinks. If someone offers to buy you a drink, make sure it is from an unopened container, or walk to the bar with the person who has offered you the drink and watch the bar staff make your drink.
